The basic idea was to make a sketchbook with 123 idea's. The 'original' ideas were scattered over numerous sketchbooks of Helmut Smits. Some in Dutch, some in English, some with black marker, some with pencil, etc. If we would scan all these 'originals' then the tone of the book would be wrong, to pretentious. The drawings would be too much like artifacts. To tackle these problems, i made a empty dummy of the book which i handed over to Helmut. I asked him to fill the book with his ideas, using only one type of pen. When i got the dummy back, i cutted the spine of it, and scanned all the pages. By doing it like this, the scale and the position of the drawings feel very direct en genuine. There are no drawings that disappear in the spine for instance. Simply beacuse Helmut was not able to draw there in the dummy. The book has a small full colour insert in which some of the 123 idea's are further developed into scultures, furniture-pieces, installations and/or performances.
